Wild Ginger

This native woodland groundcover is found creeping under the shade of trees in forests of the eastern US and Canada. A small, purple flower appears in the spring. Although not related to culinary ginger (Zingiber officinale,) the roots of this plant have a similar smell and taste, and has been used both culinarily and medicinally. Plant in moist, rich soil in dappled shade. Zone 2-8.
